Abstrak

Junior High school students are expected to have good writing ability to support their English skill to the next level. They cannot express their ideas or opinions in English without knowing writing.However, the fact shows that the students find some difficulties and also need much time to write a text.Students learns English as a foreign language often faces interference. The aims of the language teaching are very often defined with reference to the four language skills. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Teaching media which was used in this research to increase student writing ability was diary. Diary was a kind of media which help and make the students more interested in writing. The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference of the writing ability to the eighth grade students of SMP Keluarga Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using diary. This is quantitative research, which relies on quantitative data based on computation and measurement, operational variables and statistics. The method of the research is experiment. This design of the study is the quasi-experimental method with pre-test and post test through written test. There is a try out before the test, and then it is continued by validity and reliability test. The subject of the research is the eighth grade students of SMP Keluarga Kudus, which consist of the sample is class VIII C which consist of 34 students. The instrument of the research was written test given and giving treatment on seven groups in a class. The result of this research shows that (i) the writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Keluarga Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014 before being taught by using diaryis sufficient. The score of mean and deviation standard are 59,33 and 6.48 Meanwhile, the Writing Ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Keluarga Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014 after being taught by using diary as media is categorized good. The score of mean and standard deviation are 85.77 and 10.67. The calculation of t-test gets result 2.05 with the level of significant 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) 34 which is gained N1 – 1, t-table is 6.4. It is concluded that there is significant difference in the writing ability to the eighth grade students of SMP Kanisius Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using diary. Considering the process and results of this research, the writer suggest that the English teacher of Junior High school should be more creative and innovative in selecting the suitable media in teaching learning process. Diary can be used as alternative media to teach Writing. In fact, Diary can improve the writing ability and solve students’ bored in the classroom.
