Abstrak

English is international language used as a communication among nations in the world. In Indonesia, as the first foreign language, English is taught from elementary school up to University or even starts from kindergarten. English has important role in information progress in many areas; it is used for international trade, education, tourism, and other important international affairs. Because those reasons English becomes one of the materials in teaching and learning in Indonesia. One of the important components of language is called vocabulary, because without vocabulary people can not apply language well. According to the English teacher of SDN Sambung Demak the vocabulary mastery of the students is still unsatisfying because it is too difficult for the students to memorize the word in English and its meaning. When the teacher teaches vocabulary, the teacher gives a sentence and asks the students to find the meaning of each word by using dictionary and then memorize the whole words. In this study, skill circuits is chosen as a technique for teaching vocabulary. Skill circuits is a competitive group activity in which learners work in groups of 3 or 4 and move around the classroom so that it will be easier for the students to understand the material that given by the teacher. The limitation of the material that use in this research is professions and transportations that based on the syllabus. The objective of this research is to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between the Vocabulary Mastery of the Fifth Grade Students of SDN Sambung Demak in Academic Year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by Using Skill Circuit. Design of this research is an experimental research. This research conducted at SDN Sambung Demak. The subject of this research is the whole of fifth grade students of SDN Sambung Demak in academic year 2013/2014. The writer used test (pretest-posttest) with 20 multiple choice items as instrument of the research. From the result of calculating of the pre test data, it can be known that the result of the mean score of pre test is 67,06 and standard deviation is 13,7. The writer also found the highest score is 85 and the lowest score is 30. It can be said that the vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SDN Sambung Demak before being taught by using Skill Circuits is categorized fair. Meanwhile the result of the mean score of post test is 80,83 and standard deviation is 13,1. The writer also found the highest score of post test data is 100 and the lowest score is 55. Based on the result of mean score of post-test, it can be said that the vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SDN Sambung Demak after being taught by using Skill Circuits is categorized good. Based on the result of calculating data of t-test, the writer found t-observation〖(t〗_o) 11.55 while t-table(t_t) 2.042 with level of significant 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) 42. Moreover the calculation of t-observation was higher than t-table in level of significance 5%. It means there is a significance difference between the vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SDN Sambung Demak in academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using Skill Circuits. Based on the result above, the writer suggested that the English teacher is expected can use Skill Circuits as an alternative technique to teach vocabulary to the students. The teachers are suggested to use Skill Circuits as one of technique to stimulate the students’ learning spirit and interest in teaching learning process.
