Abstrak

Manner variation is one of the basic teaching skill which is very useful to establish liveliness in teaching and learning process by attracting the students’ attention for long duration. Theoretically student teachers who already trained to master this basic skill will have good teaching and learning process liveliness. However, some research found that liveliness of the student teacher teaching and learning process especially the male one is not quite good. This phenomenon motivated me to focus on the study of male student teachers’ manner variation utilization. The objective of this research is: (i) to describe what components of manner variation utilized by the male student teachers in their teaching and learning process. (ii) to describe how the male student teachers utilize the principle of manner variation in their teaching and learning process. This research used qualitative descriptive case study research design. The data of this research is the male student teachers’ manner variation utilization. And the data source of this research is video-recording transcription of three male student teachers’ who joined Muria Kudus University Teaching Practice Program in 2015/2016 academic year in Jepara regency schools. The result of this research shows that the male student teachers utilizes 6 components of manner variation, those are: voice variation, silence variation, verbal marker of importance variation, eye contact variation, gesture variation, and movement variation. Unfortunately, all of the student teachers have the same tendency to underuse the verbal marker of importance variation which is potentially lacking students’ focus on an important part of teaching. This research also found that the male student teachers’ principle of manner variation utilization is very high, in average their purposefulness is 92.61% and their smoothness is 92.53%. However, sometimes their manner variation utilization is not following its principle which is potentially distract the students’ attention. Based on the result of this research, it is better for the male student teachers to utilize more balance components of manner variation and follow the principle of manner variation more carefully to make the teaching and learning process more dynamic, communicative and purposeful. The institution should also give them more chance to practice manner variation.
