Abstrak

Plagiarism is one of crime that happen in the academic world. Some people even do not realize that they do plagiarism. Dung (2010:28) said that plagiarism is the act of appropriating the ideas, writing, or inventions of another without due acknowledgement; specifically, the stealing of passages, either word-for-word or in substance, from the writings of another and publishing them as one's own. Plagiarism happens because people have lack knowledge about what they write and understand the rules of citation. This situation must influence to their writing ability because in writing, they are not only expected to be able to express their various idea in written form, but also expected to write sentences in good patterns, such as considering punctuation, grammar, cohesion and coherence, and mastering the topic that they will write. This research is aimed to find out whether there is any significant correlation between the perception of plagiarism and the writing ability of the fifth semester students of English Education Department of Muria Kudus University in the academic year 2015/ 2016 or not. The writer conducted a correlational research. The sample is class C of Academic Writing of English Education Department of Muria Kudus University in the academic year 2015/ 2016 which consists of 29 students. The sample is taken by cluster random sampling technique. Questionnaire and test are used as the instrument of this research. The Qestionnaire consists of 20 items to get the data of students’ perception and the test is in the form of written test to get the data of the students’writing ability. All the data gained in this research were analyzed by using the formulation of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The result of statistical calculation showed that rxy was 0.79 and rt was 0.3610 with the degree of freedom (df=N-1) is 28. By comparing the values of rxy and rt, it can be gotten that rxy was higher than rt and the statistic hypothesis states: If ro > rt significance: there is correlation and Ha accepted. So the researcher concluded that the perception of plagiarism significantly correlates with the writing ability of the fifth semester students of English Education Department of Muria Kudus University in the academic year 2015/ 2016. Based on the result of the research, the researcher suggested to other researcher to conduct research related to correlational research between the perception and writing ability with different topic and sample.
