Abstrak

Vocabulary is one of English components; they are the first and foremost important step in language acquisition and helps the learners in comprehending kind of spoken and written text. In MTs N 3 Pati, the eight grade students seem not interest during teaching and learning process. They felt afraid of making mistakes so they just kept silent.It is proved by the writer observation who found the student’s score under the KKM. To cover the situation Gesture Technique can be alternative technique in teaching vocabulary. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of MTs N 3 Pati in 2015/2016 academic year before and after being taught by using Gesture Technique. This research is experimental research which used one group pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was the eight grade students of MTs N 3 Pati in 2015/2016 academic year. The writer used cluster random sampling to take the sample and got class VIII D as the sample with total of students is 30. The instrument of this research was test. The writer used multiple choices test which consists of 50 items. The result of this research showed that mean of pre-test is 70,7 and the standard deviation is 7,66. Meanwhile the mean of post-test is 79,2 and the standard deviation is 6,14. Based on t-test calculation the result showed t-obtain (to) is 6,25. With the level of significance (α) 0.05, the Degree of Freedom (df) 29, t-table (tt) is ± 2.045. Therefore, the writer rejected null hypothesis (H0) and accepted alternative hypothesis (Ha) because t-obtain (to) falls in the critical region. After conducting this research, the writer concludes that Gesture Technique is effective to be applied in teaching Vocabulary of the eight grade students of MTs N 3 Pati in 2015/2016 academic year. The writer suggests that the English teacher can use this strategy to make the students have long term memory in vocabulary mastery.
