Abstrak

teaches the material and manages the class. To make the classroom more interactive, the teacher can know language function when conveying the material in teaching English in order to make the students are easy to understand the material. But, in fact some of students are still difficult to understand it. So, the teacher could use easy language that understood by the students. The objective of this research: (i) To find out language function used by the teacher in teaching English to eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Kayen in academic year 2016/2017. (ii) To describe the students’ responses toward teacher’s language function in teaching English to eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Kayen in academic year 2016/2017. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research is teacher’s instructional talk. The data source is the teacher who teaches English at XI IPA 4 and IPA 5.It was taken by doing observation, video recording and giving questionnaire. It is conducted in one meeting in each class which each session is 90 minutes. To analyze the data, the writer identified the teacher’s instructional talk, classified, analyzed, and made the conclusion. The result of this research shows that language function of instructional talk used by the teacher who taught at XI IPA 4 and IPA 5 are 18 language functions. The dominant of language function of instructional talk was checking comprehension with the frequency is 21. It means that the teacher focus to students if the students could not understand the material. The result of questionnaire showed that the students gave positive response. It means that the teacher has appropriate instructional talk in teaching English to reach the purpose of teaching and learning process in the classroom. At the end of this research, the writer suggests that the teacher can pay attention to instructional talk and it will determine the way their students involve to response in learning material. Beside that, the teacher should create the classroom atmosphere that happy, fun and interesting to stimulate the students in giving response.
