Abstrak

Reading is an important way to get more information in the world. By reading, many people can get many knowledge to share with other people. There are many students who get some difficulties in understanding the text. Thus, it means that the English teacher should use an interesting way of teaching that can make the students more active in the classroom. Small Group Discussion is one of technique that can be used by the teacher in teaching to make students more active in classroom. The purpose of the problem is to find out the significant difference between the reading comprehension of recount text of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Karanganyar Demak in academic year 2017/2018 before and after taught by using Small Group Discussion. The design of this research is experimental research by giving pre-test and post-test. The sample is X IPS-1 of SMAN 1 Karanganyar Demak that consist of 40 students. The research instrument is a test that consists of 20 questions of multiple choice. To analyze the data the writer use Mean (average), Standard Deviation, and hypothesis testing using t-test. The outcome proved that the mean of pre-test is 58.91 and the standard deviation (SD) is 8.52. It can be classified as “Average”. While the mean of post-test is 81.47 and the standard deviation (SD) is 4.89. it can be classified as “High”. For hypothesis testing gets to =17.67 and tt = 2.042, and the level of significant is 0.05. the writer concludes that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and Ha (alternative hypothesis) is confirmed, because t(obtained) falls in the critical region. And, there is a significant difference between the reading comprehension of recount text of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Karanganyar Demak in academic year 2017/2018 before and after being taught by using small group discussion. So, it is a best technique that effective to develop the students reading comprehension of recount text of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Karanganyar Demak Based in the result above, the writer suggested that the teacher can use Small Group Discussion as a technique to teach reading to the students, because it can make the students interested in teaching learning process.
