Abstrak

Writing is the most difficult skill for students to learn in English. They need a lot of practice, and in practice, they make errors in the language. students must understand how to structure sentences correctly when they write, an example is the use of grammar. Therefore, the objective of this study is to find out the errors made by students while writing recount text based on surface strategy taxonomy and the reasons why students make grammatical errors while writing recount texts in the tenth grade at MA NU Banat Kudus. This study used qualitative research and to collect and analyze data. Data is collected from students and then analyzed to draw conclusions. This study was conducted on 15 students of X Science 2 in MA NU Banat Kudus. In this study, students were asked to write recount texts. The students' composition results were analyzed, errors were classified, and the causes of errors were classified. In conclussion, according to the research results, the overall error rate of students was 49 points. There were 27 msinformation errors, 14 omission errors, 7 addition errors, and 1 misordering error. Students make many mistakes when writing recount texts. This shows that students' ability to write recount text is still low. The causes of grammatical errors are divided into interlingual transmission and intralingual transmission.
