Abstrak
As the foreign language in Indonesia, English is very significant in some circumstances. The goal of learning English as a foreign language have to be mastered by every students especially of speaking skill. The speaking skill can improve students’ communicative skill. Thus, students can express themselves and learn how to follow the social and cultural rules appropriate in each communicative circumstance. Speaking is the ability to express the ideas using the meaningful words or sentence for communication orally. The reality in learning English in English Education Department of Muria Kudus University shows that the students are ashamed to speak in front of class because lack of vocabulary, feel unconfidence to speak English and express their ideas. They mostly feel frightened to talk about everything in English. It is becomes the responsibility of English Education Department to solve the problem. One of the program to solve that problem is by conduct the English Day program. In carrying out this research I describe the implementation of English Day program In English Education Department. The purposes of the research are ; (i) To describe the implementation of the English Day for the second, fourth, sixth and eighth semester students of English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Muria Kudus University in Academic year 2011/2012. (ii) To find out the problems in The Implementation of English Day faced by second, fourth, sixth and eighth semester students of English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Muria Kudus University in Academic year 2011/2012. This research is Descriptive research. The population of this research are the second, fourth, sixth and eighth semester students of English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Muria Kudus University in Academic year 2011/2012. The research instrument used were the questionnaire and the interview. The result of this research shows that : (i) The implementation of English day program for the second, fourth, sixth and eighth semester students of English Education Department towards students to students inside the class is a good. But if the implementation outside the class is not really good. And for the implementation toward students to lecturers it is good in implementation. (ii) The problem in the implementation of English day faced by the second, fourth, sixth and eight semester students of English Education Department Muria Kudus University in academic year 2011/2012 show that most them have the problem when they have to speak in public area because of shy and feel ridiculous to speak English in front of other people outside of the class The students should cut their shy and ridiculous. The student should aware to practice their English at the campus especially at the English Department area with or without lecturers or rules. Urgently we can declare together to cut shyness to speaking English more and more with all academic civites including rector, dean, lecturers, and students of English Education Department, which we can do periodically. We can make annual event to celebrate English Day anniversary. The lecturers give the motivation to the students while lecturing.
