Abstrak
Teaching English takes a major part in Indonesia’s education. It is a compulsory subject in junior and senior high school. Certainly it is very important for the students to understand about the subject. However, some teachers’ teaching makes the students feel bored and think that English is not interesting. From this, teachers should be aware of their own variability in teaching to make students enthusiastic to study English. This final project is a study to analyze the teachers’ manner variability in teaching English in MTs Nurul Islam Jepara. The main objectives of this research are (1) to find out the teachers’ manner variability in teaching English in MTs Nurul Islam Jepara and (2) to explain the teachers’ manner variability in teaching English in MTs Nurul Islam Jepara. This research is a qualitative research, which means the data of this research is presented descriptively. Structured interview and observation sheet are used to obtain the data needed. The result found from the research shows that (1) Teacher A and Teacher B vary the voice pitch, speed and volume, use the facial expressions and body gestures, eye contact, make the students focus by verbal and using certain gestures, move around the class, and pause the lessons. However, in certain situation both teachers omit some variations to fit the condition of the class. (2) In utilizing the manner variability, both teachersvary their voice depending on the classroom situation, condition, and the lesson taught. Both teachersoften smile in teaching. Both teachers rarely uses gestures. Both teachers use words to make the students focus and they appoint their students first to answer questions. In making eye contact, Teacher A looks at passive students to gain their attention while Teacher B prefers looking around in a group discussion. Both teachers rarely sit down while explaining. When there’s a break in the lesson, Teacher A motivates the students while Teacher B checks the students’ understanding. There are few suggestions for the teachers and other researchers. For both teachers, they can still improve their manner variability as different students can react differently when being taught using the same manner. And for other researchers, they can conduct a more specific research than this one. There are many aspects of manner variability that can be explained in detail and needs explanation in detail.
