Abstrak
English is used by many people in this world as the media of comunication. For example, they use it in magazine, newspaper, internet, advertisement, and some programs in channel of television like movie, etc. But, in education field, it is still hard to be used and understood by some students especially to understand sentence meaning in a text. By knowing the cohesive devices they can understand it better. Furthermore, the writer decides to analyze about cohesive devices in the “Eclipse” movie script. After knowing the cohesive devices in the movie script of “Eclipse” they can know how to use it in speaking. This research is aimed at knowing what type of cohesive devices are used in the “Eclipse” movie script and to know the percentage of each type of cohesive devices are used in the “Eclipse” movie script. The writer take the data from the “Eclipse” movie script that was written by Melissa Rosenberg. This study uses descriptive qualitative research in which the data are taken is the utterances expressed by the main character of the “Eclipse” movie script. The data collected are identified using Halliday and Hasan’s theory of cohesive devices. The finding of the study reveals that, on the grammatical cohesive devices, the writer finds that the most common used is reference. The percentage of it is 53,48%. Then followed by conjunction, the percentage is 23,47%. After that followed by substitution and ellipsis, the percentage is 3,18%. Nevertheless, on the lexical cohesive devices, it is found that the most common used is reiteration namely repetition, the percentage is 13,26%. After that followed by metonym, the percentage is 1,59%. Then followed by antonym, the percentage is 0,66%. After that followed by synonym and hyponym, the percentage is 0,13%. Then for Collocation found with the percentage 0,59%. So, the writer can conclude that this movie script has good cohesion as well as it can be called a good text because it has good relation among clauses. From this research, it is expected that this study will be useful for English learners. And it can be concluded that cohesive devices has very important role to make a good coherence in a text. By knowing the information of cohesive devices in spoken text, the English students should pay attention to the use of them in practicing speaking to develop their speaking.
