Abstrak

The objective of this study are to analyze the types of idiomatic expressions found in Avengers: Infinity War movie and find out the real meaning of an idiomatic expression and to find out the idiomatic expressions mostly found in Avengers: Infinity War movie. The theory from O’Dell and McCarthy and the idiomatic expression dictionary were used by researchers to answer the formulated research questions. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to conduct qualitative research. The subject of this research is Avengers: Infinity War, directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. The data is taken from a conversation script that contains idiomatic expressions in the Avengers: Infinity War film. The results show that in Avengers: Infinity War only four of the six types are idiomatic found according to O’Dell and McCarthy's theory. They are simile idiom 6,6%, binomial idiom 0%, proverb idiom 20%, euphemism idiom 3,3%, cliché idiom 30%, and fixed statement idiom 40%. The context of the sentences in the film can be used to deduce the implied meaning of idiomatic expressions. Furthermore, when translating idiomatic expressions, it is necessary to consider not only the dictionary but also the context in the film. The most frequently used idiomatic expressions in Avengers: Infinity War is cliché idioms and fixed statement idioms, according to these findings.
