Abstrak
Recently, the government uses English as one of the point target of National Examination in every junior and senior high school. It means that every student must master English to graduate from their school. And the success of mastering English depends on the competence of writing. So, every teacher thinks how to make their students understand well and master English. They asked their students to join English course extracurricular and additional course to get the main purpose, mastering English. The objective of this research is to find out the correlation between the writing ability of the students and joining the English Course in the seventh grade students of SMP N 01 Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012. The design of this research is correlation research research. The population is all of the seventh grade students of SMP N 01 Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2013. The total numbers are 117 students. The writer takes the sample by using cluster random sampling. Cluster random sampling is used to take the class which is consists of the students who join the English course. The writer makes a lottery and writes the name of classes in the seventh grade in small paper. After that she shakes the paper. Finally she gets VII A as the sample with the total is 32 students. To get the data, the writer uses documentation and questionnaire. The result of this research shows that there is a significant correlation between the writing ability of the students and joining the English Course in the seventh grade students of SMP N 01 Donorojo Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012. It based on the calculation result using product moment correlation. It is found that ro = 2.89 is higher than rt = 0.449. Based on the result of this research above, the writer suggests to the English teachers; they should apply the system of supervision; e.g. giving punishment and appreciation to the students like in the English course, so the activities of teaching learning can monitored well.
