behave. Meanwhile, we can find that appreciation has two variations; we can have good appreciation or bad appreciation. So, appreciation can be positive or negative. According to Martin and Rose (2003: 38) organize the system of appreciation around three categories: reaction, composition, and valuation. The category of reaction is further classified as reaction: impact and reaction: quality and the category of composition is further distinguished balance and complexity. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of appreciation and describe the interpretations of types of appreciation in texts in English textbooks grade X. This study is a content analysis of qualitative research. It is used to unfold the types of appreciation and interpretations of types of appreciation in texts in English textbooks grade X. The result showed that all types of appreciation in all six texts selected in three English textbooks. The occurrence of positive type is (79). Then, the occurrences of system of appreciation of things are reaction (59), composition (16) and valuation (4). The occurrence of negative type is (38). Then, the occurrences of system of appreciation of things are reaction (23), composition (12) and valuation (3). The writer interpret that the texts which mostly use positive appreciation. It indicates that the texts in English textbooks is good source in teaching and learning process and also give a good effect of students’ appreciation when they are reading and understanding the text. The writer states the suggestions that are addressed to the students and teacher at school, lecturers and students of UMK and the future researchers. (1) for students and teachers, appreciation is a kind of attitude that are negotiated in a text, students and teachers should give more attention to study and understanding about appreciation in English textbooks they used in class. So, the students will be more get example and types of appreciation, it can differ between good and bad appreciation to use and they can use them in their daily life. (2) For English learners, they should learn about discourse, especially in appraisal area and appreciation as one of main topic on negotiating attitude. The information will be useful for their daily-life conversation, interaction, and the problem solving of communication’s misunderstanding. (3) For the Further Researchers, the writer suggest those who want to conduct a similar research as the writer did, you can use this research as previous research finding to sustain their research.
