Abstrak

This paper focuses on the representation of cultural diversity in America in Richard La Gravenese’s 1994 film (Freedom Writers). This film is of particular interest as it is based on the true story about racial tension among multicultural students whose races are different (African-American, Whites, Latinos, Cambodians, Vietnamese, Caucasian, and Blacks). Those were claimed as unteacheable as almost of them had witnessed or been shot because of gang crime. The teacher uses some strategies such as giving literary books for free to wake them up that races (multiculturalism) should have not been a matter. This film promotes the ideology of equality, which is achieved at the narrative-disclosure. Multiculturalism shown in this film can be used to give an understanding about multicultural identities in language classroom. It inspires those who teach students with different cultures and languages and enhances the students’ understanding of having no prior knowledge about multiculturalism. This paper will explore the extent to which this film challenges misassumption negative stereotypes about each race have been put in the media. Also, this paper will elaborate strategies used by the teacher to face challenges of multicultural students in language classroom.
