Abstrak

Romdlon, Ahmad Maarif. 2014. An Analysis of Speech Act in The Interview Script of “Obama on Partisanship and Getting Things Done in Washington” Between Michael Scherer and Obama on August 30th, 2012. Skripsi. English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty Muria Kudus University. Advisor: (1) Atik Rokhayani, S.Pd, M.Pd. (2) Mutohhar, S.P.d, M.Pd. Key words : Interview, speech act function, illocutionary act Language is a communication tool that has been used since the first humans to express opinions, ideas, passion or desire and the talk. Hence, communication is a very important need for humans as social beings. Speech act is study of how performing action via utterance. The writer choose to analyze speech act in the interview script of “Obama on partisanship and getting things done” because this interview is also interesting and we can know about Obama’s policy in using funding to get education changes. The objectives of this research are to find out the speech act classification on function and the illocutionary act in the interview script of “Obama on Partisanship and getting Things Done in Washington” between Michael Scherer and Obama on August, 30th 2012. To obtain the objectives of the research, the descriptive qualitative is used to design this research. Whereas, the data in this research is the utterances in the interview of between Michael Scherer and Barack Obama on August, 30th 2012 and the data source in this research is the script of the interview of between Michael Scherer and Barack Obama on August, 30th 2012. Based on the analyzing of the data, firstly, it was found the speech act classification on function and the illocutionary act. The writer found 165 speech act classification on function. They are 140 assertive utterances, 17 directive utterances, 7 commissive utterances, 0 expressive utterances and 0 declarative utterances. The writer also found 165 illocutionary act and divide it into some types; greeting, apologizing, describing something, asking something, making a request and giving and order and making a promise. Therefore, The writer suggests that for the students, this research aims to understand and improve their knowledge and skill about speech act classification on function and illocutionary act. For lecturers and teachers, this research aimed at all English teacher and lecturer especially the lecturers of English Education Department who teach pragmatics which are explaining about speech act, especially illocutionary acts, they should focus on explaining the speech acts theory, the aims or the characteristics of each type of speech acts. So, they can improve their students’ knowledge. For further researchers, the further researchers who want to research about speech act should focus on understanding the speech acts theory and what kinds of text they will be studied. This research can be reference in understanding about illocutionary acts and the speech acts classification on function.
