Abstrak
Writing is a skill to express ideas, thoughts and memories into written form, either from sentences, paragraph or composition which need some practice done step by step. The students get difficulties in finding and generating ideas to start their writing. One of the materials which are taught in the seventh grade of Junior High School is genre. Procedure is one of genre that is designed to describe how something is achieved through squence of actions or steps. Genre- Based Approach is an approach in teaching and learning process, especially English as foreign language in which students learn about social function, generic structure and language feature of a genre. This research have purpose to find out the answer from the statement of the problem; First, Can Genre- Based Approach Improve the Writing Skill of Procedure Texts of VII.A Grade Students of SMP N 2 Bulu Rembang in Academic Year 2013/2014. Second, How is the Students’ Response in Teaching Writing Procedure Texts by Using Genre- Based Approach of VII.A Grade Students of SMP N 2 Bulu Rembang in Academic Year 2013/2014. This is classroom action research. This research conduct in SMP N 2 Bulu Rembang. Subject of the research is VII.A grade students in second semester. The material used is procedure text. The writer uses some instrument to collect the data. They are observation, test and questionnaire by using Genre- Based Approach. The result of this research revealed that genre - based approach gives some contributions improve students’ achievement and students’ response in writing procedure text. The result shows that the improvements happen in every cycle. It was supported by the results of the pre- cycle, the average score of achievement test of using Genre- Based Approach was 65,47 and the percentage of average score was 65.47%. In the cycle I, the average score of achievement test by using Genre- Based approach was 72,62 and the percentage of average score was 72.62%. In the cycle II, the average score of achievement test by using Genre- Based approach was 78,81 and the percentage of average score was 78.81% so the writing skill in cycle II is very satisfied. Based on the result of the research above, the writer suggests that English teachers, the students and further research should use genre - based approach in writing a procedure text in teaching and learning process to make them easily. By using genre - based approach, students can write down what they think of in their mind and state it on paper by using sequence of steps and grammar in correct way in writing procedure text. So it can improve their writing skill.
