Abstrak

Speaking is one of the important skills to be mastered by the students in order to be able to use English for communicative purpose orally. Having good English speaking ability is very important especially for the Indonesian students because it becomes the measurement how successful they are in learning a language. However, almost the students are still difficult to speak English well. They also felt shy and afraid of makingmistake to speak English. These problems happen not only because they do not know how topronounce some of the words but also the less of vocabulary and ideas. Almost the students get score of speaking test is lower than the KKM. To solve the problems above, the writer used Single Slot Substitution Drill (SSSD) as a technique in teaching speaking. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the seventh grade students of MTs NU Miftahul Ma’arif Kaliwungu Kudus in 2015/2016 academic year before and after being taught by using Single Slot Substitution Drill (SSSD). The design of this research is an experimental research using single group. The population of this research is the seventh grade students of MTs NU Miftahul Ma’arif Kaliwungu Kudus in 2015/2016 academic year. The subject of this research is the students in the seventh grade that is 7A class, which consist of 37 students. The research instrument is used by the writer is oral test. The result of this research, it was found that the speaking ability of the seventh grade students of MTs NU Miftahul Ma’arif Kaliwungu Kudus in 2015/2016 academic year before being taught by using Single Slot Substitution Drill (SSSD) was categorized sufficient. The mean is 64.46, and the standard deviation is 9.21. Meanwhile, the speaking ability of the seventh grade students of MTs NU Miftahul Ma’arif Kaliwungu Kudus in 2015/2016 academic year after being taught by using Single Slot Substitution Drill (SSSD) was categorized good. The mean is 77.54 and standard deviation is 8.68. Moreover, the calculation of t-observation (to) 11.08 was higher than t-table (tt) 2.042 in level of significance 5%. It means that there is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the seventh grade students of MTs NU Miftahul Ma’arif Kaliwungu Kudus in 2015/2016 academic year before and after being taught by using Single Slot Substitution Drill (SSSD). Based on the result above, the writer suggested that the English teacher is expected to be able to use SSSD as a technique to teach the students in speaking English. The teachers are suggested to use SSSD as one of techniques to make the students enthusiastic, confidence and active speaking in teaching learning process
