Abstrak

Simple present tense is one of grammar materials that must be mastered by the seventh grade students of MTs NU Nurul Ulum Jekulo Kudus. In fact, most of the seventh grade students assume that grammar is difficult to be learn. The factors that make the students difficult in learning grammar are they had less knowledge in grammar and they do not understand yet every part of words in sentence. To cover this situation, Sentence Cubes Game can be an alternative way in teaching simple present tense. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference on the mastery of simple present tense of the seventh grade students of MTs NU Nurul Ulum Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2017/2018 before and after being taught by using Sentence Cubes Game. This research was an experimental research used one group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this research is the seventh grade students of MTs NU Nurul Ulum Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2017/2018 and the sample of this research is the students of 7C that consist of 36 students. The instrument of this research was test. The result of this research shows that the mean score of pre-test is 65.8 and the standard deviation is 12.72. While, the result of mean score in post-test is 74.6 and standard deviation is 9.94. It was found t-observation (t0) 7.67 and t-table (tt) 2.042 in the level of significance 0.05, degree of freedom (df) 35. In this case, t-observation is higher than t-table (t0>tt). So, it shows that there is significant difference between the mastery of simple present tense of the seventh grade students of MTs NU Nurul Ulum Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2017/2018 before and after being taught by using Sentence Cubes Game. Based on the result above, the writer concludes that the mastery of simple present tense of the seventh grade students of MTs NU Nurul Ulum Jekulo Kudus in academic year 2017/2018 after being taught by using Sentence Cubes Game is better than before being taught by using Sentence Cubes Game. It means that Sentence Cubes Game is an effective and appropriate game to teach simple present tense. For the English teacher and further reseracher, Sentence Cubes Game can be applied as an alternative game in teaching simple present tense to make the students more active and enjoyable in learning process.
