Abstrak

Taboo is one study of sociolinguistics that has relation with the culture and society. Using taboo words will create a problem for many people if they do not understand the meaning and the functions why others utter taboo words. There are four kinds of taboo words they are epithet, profanity, vulgarity, obscenity. While the functions of taboo words are to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, to be provocative, and to mock authority. The aims of the research are (i) to identify and describe the types of taboo words used in Anna Todd’s fan fiction entitled After 2. (ii) to describe the functions of taboo words used in Anna Todd’s fan fiction entitled After 2. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. This research describes the types of taboo words and the functions of taboo words used in Anna Todd’s fan fiction entitled After 2. The data is from the utterances contains types of taboo words and the function of taboo words while for the data source taken from www.wattpad.com , and it’s written by Anna Todd. The result of this research shows that: (i) there are 80 utterances of the types of taboo words which the most dominant used is obscenity with 45 utterances. (ii) there are 80 utterances of the functions of taboo words which the most dominant used is to mock authority with 29 utterances. Finally, the writer suggests that taboo words is one of important materials in learning language. The students of English Education Department can discuss or analyzes the types of taboo words and the function of taboo words. And for the further writer, they should pay attention to the theory of taboo words. Then for the lecturer has to give the study of sociolinguistic especially taboo words in order to make the students are understand about the study in contextual meaning of utterances. And the reader can use and analyze the meaning of utterance by sociolinguistic and taboo words, because both of them are important part in daily life to communicate with appropriate and inappropriate words.
