Abstrak

Reading is the fundamental ability that underpins all others, including writing, speaking, and listening. Students must read extensively and comprehend the reading content in order to attain better results in the learning process. This study focuses on the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of senior high school in reading comprehension. The purposes of the study were to find out the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMK N 2 Kudus. The study utilized a descriptive qualitative method, employing tests and questionnaires as data collection instruments. The test comprised 20 questions Additionally, the questionnaire included 10 statements representing five indicators. The result of the test showed that The difficulties faced by the students are difficulty in answering main idea questions (75%), making inferences questions (49%), and locating reference questions (71%). Therefore, the most difficult aspect faced by the tenth grade students is reading for getting main idea with (75%). As the result, the most difficult aspect that encountered by the students of SMK N 2 Kudus was finding main idea questions, because the located main idea was difficult to find. In conclusion, the research focused on the challenges in reading comprehension for tenth-grade students at SMK N 2 Kudus. The analysis of test data revealed difficulties in three question types: main idea, making inferences, and locating references. Primary issues included struggles with word meanings, comprehension of long sentences, determining the main idea, understanding grammar, and making inferences. This underscores the students' overall difficulty in grasping the main idea during reading comprehension tests.
