Abstrak
Collaborative writing. This study aims to characterize and elucidate the coherence and cohesiveness of student-written English reports. Collaborative writing and individually writing are approaches that Teachers can use this to help their pupils grow as writers. This research was designed as qualitative research. This research aims to explore the report text cohesion and coherence produced by the students collaboratively and individually. It was conducted in 2 classes of the eleventh grade in SMK Duta Karya Kudus. The students chosen were class B and C in grade eleventh. The data were collected through studentsā report writings. Halliday and Hasan's (1976) theories were applied to the data analysis. Method of the research was descriptive qualitative. The data sources were represented by 46 students of SMK Duta Karya Kudus. Documentation from letters, reports, and other written texts pertaining to grammatical cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction), lexical cohesion (reiteration and collocation), and coherence features in the students' writings served as the source of data for this study. The study's findings demonstrated that students used five different kinds of cohesive devices to support the coherence of their writing, with the most common application being personal reference, which was used by 54% of the students individually and 30% of them in groups or collaboratively. Subsequently, a combination of 28% individually and 36% in groups/collaboratively, substitution 2% individually and 4% in groups/collaboratively, collocation 4% individually and 14% in groups/collaboratively, reiteration 6% individually and 9% in groups/collaboratively, while ellipsis 6% individually and 2% in groups/collaboratively; subsequently the students' development of the report's concepts and general structure, which results in coherence; Next, issues with conjunction (additive, adversative, causal, temporal), reference (personal, demonstrative), and restricted lexical item selection were noted as coherence issues.The other problem was the students less focus to choose some vocabulary for their sentences which have correlation each other and meaningful for the readers through the cohesive devices and the coherence one. Therefore the students should be motivated and facilitated in producing written text so that they can increase and developing their writing text which have cohesion and coherence better.
